TMJ in Kiddos

TMJ in Kiddos:
Here we are talking TMJ or temporomandibular joint dysfunction in littles! The jaw can sometimes be tight due to the birth process or in littles who clench due to different stressors in their lives. Children with tongue or lip ties also can develop tightness in this joint, often due to open mouth posture. Begin by placing a finger directly in front of the ear where the TMJ joint is located. Using gentle but firm pressure traction down the jaw. Repeat 3-4x each side. The masseter muscle is located in this space as well and can contribute to jaw tightness in littles. In infants, the jaw can appear to "click" while the infant is feeding - this would be another time to try this technique!
