Chiropractic + At Home Solutions for Ear Infections

Ear infections are incredibly common especially in kidz! Chiropractic care can be one conservative + safe treatment option for you and your little. This blog covers the common symptoms of ear infections, what chiropractic treatment looks like + solutions for you at home!
Ear infections are something that can affect anyone and they are incredibly common! In fact most kids will have at least one middle ear infection by the time they turn 3! Ear infections can occur when there is fluid build up in the middle ear. This occurs when the tube that connects your ear to your nasal cavity [auditory tube, or Eustachian tube] isn’t draining properly. The fluid buildup ultimately leads to increased pressure in the ear which causes pain and eventually leads to the infection!
Kidz auditory tubes are shorter, more horizontal, and more narrow. This makes it easier for the tube to become obstructed following and inflammation, infection, or allergic reaction in the nose.
Kidz immune systems are not as robust as adults’ since they have yet to encounter many of the viruses + bacteria that can cause a middle ear infection.
Chiropractic care and Craniosacral Therapy (CST) can help with ear infections. Our goal with treatment is to work with structures closely related to the auditory (Eustachian) tube to allow for fluid to drain out of the ear through the tube more easily. This removes substances out of the ear as well as relieves excessive pressure from inside the ear. Doing so leads to improvements in the child’s hearing, speech, etc. Craniosacral therapy gently relieves pressure in the bones surrounding the brain and supports the nervous system while the body fights off these infections!
Chiropractic treatment for ear infections primarily includes chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue techniques. With ear infections and respiratory infections, we commonly see spinal misalignments in the upper neck. Using gentle adjustments, we can correct these which helps restore the full function of the nervous system! We also can adjust the ear itself and massage the lymph nodes in the neck to encourage further drainage!
Below is a video showing what ear drainage looks like on an infant in the clinic! Here we focus on physically stretching a tiny muscle, the tensor veli palatini, which opens the auditory tube and helps drain any fluid. The muscle is at the back of the mouth, where soft and hard palate meet.
-Saline ear rinse : using a saline solution, rinse the ear out. Use a small amount and let the the excess solution drip out of the ear by tipping the head. You can use an ear cleaner like this one, but it's not necessary.
-Tea Tree//OIive oil Massage : using a cotton ball or small cup, get some olive oil onto your thumb. You can add a drop of tea tree oil to your thumb as well. Tea tree oil has antibacterial affects, so there is added benefit! Place your oiled thumb on the bony part behind the ear, the mastoid process. Begin gently massaging this area, and you can work your way down along the jaw line. [ You are only using a cotton ball to avoid putting your hand directly on the oil bottle…keeping it sanitary.]
-Lemon Juice Drops : using warmed lemon juice, put a few drops in the ear. This should help ease pain.
-Oral Probiotics [especially with antibiotic treatment] : Probiotics help support a healthy gut, which in turn supports a healthy immune system.
