Birth is tough work for both mom and baby. Dr. Viola Fymann, an osteopathic doctor studied more than 1500 babies across an 8 year period.  The study concluded that 90% of newborns suffered the effects of birth trauma. This is why it is so crucial to get your child evaluated by a chiropractor - since 65% of neurological development occurs during this first year. Birth in its many different forms may be quite traumatic, causing some sort of strain to the baby. Researcher G. Gutmann wrote, “The trauma from the birth process remains under-publicized and therefore significant under-treated problem.”

So what can cause birth trauma in infants?

  1. Very short/long labor
  2. Failure of cervix to dilate
  3. Use of pitocin, pain medication, forceps, or vacuum extraction
  4. C-section due to lack of progress
  5. Pulling/twisting of infant’s head to delivery infant’s body
  6. Restricted maternal birthing positions

If left uncorrected, this trauma will continue to impact the infant throughout development which will in turn reduce the healthy function of the nervous system. This then leads to many health problems such as nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, colic, and other common conditions later in life that are stated above.

If your baby’s spine stays imbalanced, it will put tension on their nervous system. Tension on their nervous system looks like this:

-difficulty latching/breastfeeding issues

-neurological developmental milestones

-colic

-acid reflux/frequent spitting up

-torticollis

-sleeping issues

-plagiocephaly (misshapen head)

-constipation/gassiness

-ear infections

-bedwetting

-behavioral/attention issues

-weakened immune function (ex. Allergies, asthma)

Chiropractic care can help children of ALL ages! Chiropractic is a vital, very safe and effective form of health care. Chiropractors who care for infants use very specific, gentle adjustments that do not involve the “cracking” that most people correlate with chiropractic adjustments. Most infants sleep, have a bowel movement, or smile during adjustments while older kiddos are able to play throughout their adjustments.
