What is Webster?
The Webster Technique is a technique for pregnant women specifically performed by female chiropractic specialists. Starting at 30 weeks of pregnancy, this technique is used to optimize the natural physiology of the woman's body during the end stages of pregnancy - it is a great way to prep for labor + delivery! This technique focuses on your sacrum (tailbone), surrounding ligaments (round ligament + sacrotuberous ligament), hip flexors (Iliopsoas), pelvis (low back) + pubic symphysis (crotch bone). The technique involves muscle and ligament work in conjunction with pregnancy specific chiropractic adjustments. Using a specialized women’s pillow with areas for bellies and boobs, mama lays comfortably while we address any restrictions we find within the pelvis. [More on what this treatment looks like.]
Flipping Breech Babies?
You might hear people talk about this technique as a way to flip a breech baby [baby is in the wrong position for delivery, depicted below]. The Webster Technique is primarily performed to neutralize the pelvis and create space so that baby settles into the best position for labor & delivery. This relieves tension off mama + baby so they are most comfortable through pregnancy [less pain].
If you are further along in your pregnancy and you are looking to create movement or a change in baby positioning and you haven't already been treating with a chiropractor, you may be a candidate for an ECV (External Cephalic Version) which involves an OB (obstetrician) treating hands on the baby to induce a flip. The Webster Technique can be a wonderful adjunctive therapy for an EVC, to address any pelvic movement restrictions and increased pelvis adaptability, thus assisting in the flip.
