Chiropractor for kids? What are the benefits of seeing a specialized pediatric chiropractor? The TOP 10 Pediatric Conditions that we can help your child with + all common questions we are getting in the clinic surround pediatric chiropractic care.
Top 10 Pediatric Health Conditions that Benefit from Chiropractic Care:
First and foremost......Is it safe? ABSOLUTELY. When working with children, we use the pressure that can be compared to checking the ripeness of an avocado. Frequently, a spring loaded instrument, called an activator, is used to provide a low force adjustment. There is no "cracking" associated with an adjustment on an infant. Working with kids in the chiropractic world involves using an incredibly gentle technique that can be modified for a child's needs or preferences.
What can it help with? Chiropractic care is beneficial for children to promote proper growth and development. Care can limit health challenges such as ear infections or issues with nursing and acid reflux. Whether we have a large spine or a tiny little spine, that spine can have misalignments causing stress to our nervous systems. Ultimately, regular adjustments allow a child’s nervous system to function optimally as they grow and develop.
When should they go? How Often? We recommend that infants be seen by a pediatric chiropractor after they are born to address any birth trauma that may have occurred. After that, developmental milestones, any illnesses, or major falls are good times to get your child examined by a chiropractor. Our pediatric specialist see's all children from birth to 12 years of age.
More frequently asked questions that are a bit more condition specific:
What is craniosacral therapy?
CST is a gentle technique that releases tension in the body. We use soft touch to release restrictions in the soft tissue surrounding the central nervous system.
How can chiropractic care and CST help children overcome ear infections?
How does chiropractic care and CST help with tongue and lip ties?
Chiropractic care and CST can help children overcome ear infections by improving Eustachian tube shape, allowing for fluid to drain out of the ear through the tube ore easily. Blockage or congestion of this tube is a frequent cause of ear infections since they typically block viruses and bacteria from getting into the middle ear. Ear infections are so common in children because their Eustachian tubes are more horizontal than adults, and become more diagonal as they grow. Ear infections cause pain as well as make it difficult for a kiddo to hear, speak, move and pay attention. CST and chiropractic care are gentle methods of allowing fluid to drain properly through the Eustachian tubes, which removes substances out of the ear as well as relieve excessive pressure from inside the ear. Doing so leads to improvements in the child’s hearing, speech, etc.
Chiropractic care and CST cannot make tongue and lip ties disappear. What they can do is decrease the restriction and tension throughout the body, which improves mobility. Often in babies with TOTs (tethered oral tissues) there are often restrictions elsewhere in the body. Chiropractic care and CST alone cannot fix TOTs - it is a team effort. Getting the tethered oral tissue revised by a pediatric dentist is critical in removing the baby’s tongue/lip tie. Chiropractic care & CST help support the revision by removing any tension in the body, allowing the body to get ready for the revision as well as aid in the healing process. Without proper preparation and post surgery stretching, many babies have reattachment of the frenulums and need to be re-revised. Chiropractic care and CST will help release restriction, improve structural alignment, improve mobility, improve latch, and calm the central nervous system.
